Driving Record Check

Steer clear of high-risk hires

What is a driving record check?

A driving record check, often called an MVR (Motor Vehicle Report) check, is a background screening that pulls an individual’s driving history from the state DMV records. It shows information like the status of their driver’s license, any traffic violations, citations, accidents, DUI convictions, and points on their license over a certain period. This check is crucial for any role that involves driving a company vehicle, operating machinery, or even driving on company time.

Why it matters

If your employees drive as part of their job, even occasionally, their driving behavior becomes a liability and safety concern for your company.

Ensure safety and reduce liability. If you put someone with a poor driving history behind the wheel of a company car (or even their own car on company business), you risk accidents that could harm them, others, and subject your company to lawsuits and insurance claims. MVR checks are a primary way to screen out high-risk drivers and thereby protect the safety of all road users and minimize your liability exposure.

Comply with insurance and regulations. Many insurance carriers require or strongly incentivize employers to check driving records for anyone who will be insured to drive company vehicles. Also, certain roles by law require good driving records. By performing MVR checks, you ensure you meet any legal standards for driver qualification and keep your commercial auto insurance premiums in check.

Protect your company’s reputation. If an employee drives a company-branded vehicle, their driving is essentially a moving billboard for your brand. A driver who drives aggressively or gets pulled over frequently while in a company vehicle reflects poorly. By ensuring your drivers have good records and presumably good habits, you protect your reputation in the community. Even internal reputation among employees matters. Employees want to know the person driving the company vanpool or shuttle is safe. Screening driving records helps maintain trust that the company prioritizes safety.

Verify license validity and candidate identity. An MVR check not only reveals violations, but also confirms the license is valid and in the candidate’s name. It also typically shows the class and any endorsements, which could be relevant to the job (ensuring they have the proper class of license for the vehicle they’ll drive).

How ScoutLogic does it differently

ScoutLogic provides social media screening with a careful, professional touch that stands out.

Rapid turnaround via direct DMV integration. We connect electronically to DMVs in all 50 states (and DC) where available, which means in most cases we get MVR results back in minutes to hours, not days. Some states still require manual processing but we handle those swiftly via our network of runners. We keep track of each state’s peculiarities and translate that into a consistent format for you.

Integrated multi-state search (CDL and non-CDL). If the position is a DOT-regulated (CDL) role, we do a CDLIS inquiry to find past licenses. For non-regulated roles, we typically only do current state unless you have reason to check others. We cover special cases, too: say if the candidate has a Canadian license, we can obtain Canadian driving abstracts via partnerships. Our comprehensive approach means if the data is out there, we’ll help you get it.

Continuous MVR monitoring. We offer annual re-checks or even continuous driving record monitoring (in states where that’s available and permitted). Continuous monitoring means we’ll get notified if your employee gets a new violation or suspension, rather than finding out potentially a year later. For states that don’t have an automatic system, we schedule periodic pulls. This service ensures ongoing compliance and gives you peace of mind that your once-good driver hasn’t since racked up issues without you knowing.

Bulk & on-demand solutions with data security: If you’re screening many drivers (like hiring seasonal delivery drivers in bulk), our system handles high volume efficiently. We can process batches of MVR requests overnight for hundreds of names. We also ensure data security. Driving records contain personal info, which we protect in our system with encryption and limiting who can view. We maintain audit logs if needed, and if you have multiple locations or hiring managers, our platform can show them just their candidates’ reports rather than everyone’s, preserving some privacy.
